Description

Une Famille Un Toit 44 has been delivering affordable housing for households facing exclusion for nearly twenty years. The association contributes to the revitalisation of town and village centres—particularly in rural areas—by rehabilitating vacant buildings to meet local needs. It also experiments with new housing models for vulnerable groups (people living alone, older residents, Travellers, migrants, etc.), while actively taking on the preservation of neglected rural heritage.
The former post office in Treffieux is emblematic of the abandonment of the village centre and its traditional housing stock. In 2019, the site was the subject of a call for proposals, which our team won. Located at the heart of the village, it offers a prime opportunity to restore social and functional mix. The neighbouring plot is occupied by a former farm, also derelict, which we propose to incorporate into the project. Combined, the two sites can become a large garden open to the public, extending a pedestrian link that runs through the village centre.
In this restoration project, our approach is to intervene as lightly as possible in the existing buildings. The interiors are arranged in continuity with the existing structure and layouts, giving the new dwellings distinctive qualities that depart from today’s standardised collective housing. Bio-based materials and traditional techniques (lime–hemp insulation, lime plasters) are implemented to achieve strong energy performance. Materials and construction processes remain simple—sometimes deliberately rustic—in order to reduce operating costs for the housing provider.
